To get rid of the AVG Hide Notification area (until the next program update, that is), go to:

C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8.

Rename avgmwdef_us.mht to avgmwdef_us.mht.bak, avgresf.dll to avgresf.dll.bak and avgfree_us.mht to avgfree_us.mht.bak.

And, gone!
